Car carpet replacement: moulded, cut-pile and what goes underneath

New carpet is the cheapest interior change that makes an old car feel different — provided you deal with what is under it at the same time.

Car carpet replacement: moulded, cut-pile and what goes underneath

Carpet is the largest single surface in most interiors and the one that shows age fastest. It is also the only interior job where the thing underneath matters more than the thing you can see.

What goes underneath is the real upgrade

With the carpet out, the floor is bare and accessible — and it is the only time it will be. This is the moment for sound deadening, and it is the single biggest change you can make to how an older car feels to drive.

Road noise, exhaust drone and the general tinniness of an old floor pan all drop noticeably. It costs relatively little on top of a job already being done, and doing it later means paying to pull the carpet a second time.

Wet carpet is a symptom, not a problem

If the carpet is damp, replacing it without finding the water is money thrown away. Common sources:

  • Blocked sunroof drains — water runs down the pillars and appears in the footwell nowhere near the roof
  • Failed windscreen or door seals
  • Heater matrix leaks, which usually smell sweet and fog the windscreen
  • Body plugs and seam sealer that have let go underneath

Wet carpet also hides floor-pan rust, and that is worth knowing about before it becomes structural rather than cosmetic.

Do not forget the pieces around it

New carpet next to a sun-bleached kick panel or a worn shift boot draws attention to both. Carpet, boot and trim panels are usually best done together, which is why a carpet job on a classic often turns into a broader interior conversation.
