The fabric is fine. What failed is behind it.
Every headliner is fabric bonded to a thin layer of foam, and that foam is glued to a moulded board. Heat and age turn the foam to powder. The fabric has nothing left to hold on to, so it drops away from the board in sheets.
Why the quick fixes fail
- Spray adhesive bonds fabric to powder. There is nothing solid underneath for it to grip.
- Twist pins hold the fabric up in spots and leave dimples between them — and marks in the fabric when they come out.
- Steam and re-glue does not stop the foam breaking down, so the same thing happens again.
- Replacing the whole board is usually unnecessary. Yours is almost always sound.

The board comes out of the car. That is the difference between a headliner that is fixed and one that is patched.

A headliner is a half-day of bench work — the board comes out of the car, gets stripped and recovered, and goes back in — so the car comes to us. We are on W Hwy 74 west of downtown Monroe. Cars come out to us from Charlotte and the rest of Mecklenburg, from all over Union County, and from Rock Hill and Fort Mill across the state line.
