01Vinyl tops

A vinyl top fails from underneath, where you cannot see it.

The padding under the covering holds water against the roof skin. By the time the vinyl splits at a seam, the question is not the vinyl — it is what the water has been doing to the metal.

02Why they go

The covering is the symptom. The padding is the cause.

A vinyl roof is a covering bonded over padding on a steel roof. The padding soaks up water and holds it against the metal, so the roof rots from underneath while the top still looks passable from the pavement. The split you can see at the seam is usually the last thing to happen, not the first.

We will not put a new top over rust. And we deal with the rust here rather than sending the car out and adding somebody else's markup to your bill.

Why patching it does not hold

  • Re-gluing a lifting edge can buy a season if the material is still soft. Once it has gone hard, it is a recover.
  • A patch over the split hides the one place you could have seen what the water was doing underneath.
  • Leaving it because it is only cosmetic is how a covering problem becomes a roof skin problem.
  • Cutting around the mouldings leaves an edge you will notice every time you walk up to the car.
03What we do

Stripped to the metal, then re-covered

The same car at three stages. The middle picture is the part nobody sees and the part that decides how long the new top lasts.

1A vinyl roof covering rotted through to the padding underneath

What comes off

  • Old covering and padding stripped back
  • Mouldings and trim removed, not cut around
  • The roof skin uncovered so it can be seen
2The same roof stripped bare with the mouldings removed, ready for the new top

The metal gets checked

  • Rust found and dealt with here, not sent out
  • Skin cleaned back to a sound surface
  • No new top goes on until it is right
3The finished vinyl top wrapped around the opera window on the same car

New covering fitted

  • Grained vinyl matched to your paint or interior
  • Wrapped properly around opera windows and quarters
  • Mouldings refitted once the top is on

Monroe, NC — and worth the drive for this one

A vinyl top is specialist work: the old covering comes off, the steel underneath gets checked for rust, and the new material is bonded and trimmed by hand. Very few shops still take it on, so cars come to us at 4209 W Hwy 74 in Monroe from Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, all over Union County, Concord and Gastonia, and from Rock Hill and Fort Mill in South Carolina.

Where are you, and do you cover Charlotte?
The shop is at 4209 W Hwy 74 in Monroe, NC, straight out from Charlotte on 74. We take vinyl top work from Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, the whole of Union County, Concord and Gastonia, and Rock Hill and Fort Mill across the South Carolina line. Send a photo of the roof and we will tell you what it needs before you drive over.
Is a vinyl top the same job as a convertible top?
No. A vinyl top is a covering bonded to a fixed steel roof; a convertible top is fabric over a folding frame with a rear window in it. We do both and they are priced completely differently. If your roof does not fold, this is the right page — if it does, see our convertible tops page.
Is there rust under my vinyl top?
Often there is some, and it is the real reason not to leave a failed top on the car. We strip the roof back and look at the metal before quoting the covering, not after — and we handle the rust here rather than sending it out. We will not fit a new top over it.
Can a vinyl top be repaired instead of replaced?
A lifting edge or an open seam can sometimes be re-bonded while the material is still soft. Once it has gone hard, split across the top, or rotted where water has been sitting, it is a recover. Bring it by and we will tell you honestly which one you have.
Can you match the colour to my paint?
That is usually where the job starts. Grained vinyl comes in a wide colour range and we will lay samples on the car in daylight before anything is ordered, because a colour that looks right indoors can read completely differently against your paint outside.
How long does it take?
It depends on what is under the old covering. A sound roof stripped and re-covered is straightforward; rust or a damaged skin adds time. We will tell you that with the old top off rather than spring it on you later.

A picture of the roof and anywhere it has lifted or split, plus the year, make and model, is usually enough for an estimate.
