A convertible top replacement is really three jobs in one: the fabric or vinyl top itself, the rear window, and whatever needs repairing on the frame and pads underneath. Most quotes people bring us from elsewhere only cover the first one, which is why two estimates for the same car can look so far apart.
The three things that set the price
1. Material: vinyl, Stayfast or Twillfast
Material is the first fork in the road, and it is worth knowing that almost every quality replacement top in the US is made by one company — the Haartz Corporation — in a handful of distinct grades. When a shop says "vinyl or cloth", these are usually the actual materials being discussed.

The honest summary: vinyl is not a downgrade on a car that came with vinyl — it is the correct answer, and it holds up very well in the Carolina sun. Cloth is worth paying for when the car came with cloth, when you want the richer look, or when you care about how quiet the car is at highway speed. We keep samples of each in the shop so you can feel the difference before you commit to it.
2. The rear window
A top with a heated glass rear window is a different job from one with a plastic curtain, and the two are priced differently. On older cars the window is very often the reason the top failed in the first place — a plastic curtain clouds, cracks at the fold line, then lets water in. If you are replacing the top anyway, this is the moment to decide whether glass is worth it.
3. The frame, pads and bows underneath
This is the part that separates a real quote from a cheap one. If the pads are collapsed or the bows are bent, a new top fitted over them will sit badly no matter how good the fabric is — and it will wear through early at every high spot. We check the frame before quoting rather than after.
What a photo can and cannot tell us
Send photos and we will come back to you with an estimate — pictures are genuinely useful for narrowing down material, style and rough cost. What a photograph cannot show is a collapsed pad or a bent bow, or where an old top was stretched to cover a frame problem someone chose not to fix.
So on a convertible top we will usually want to see the car before the number is final. Pricing a frame nobody has looked at means either guessing high to stay safe, or guessing low and revising once the car is apart, and neither is fair to you. The estimate is free and itemised either way, so you can see which of the three jobs above each line belongs to.
Signs your top needs replacing rather than repairing
- The rear window has clouded, yellowed or split along a fold
- Seams are opening, or stitching has rotted through
- The fabric has gone chalky and stiff rather than supple
- Water is getting in even though the top latches properly
- The top no longer sits tight when raised, or bunches when lowered
Not all of these mean a full replacement. A seam can often be restitched and a window can sometimes be replaced on its own. Bring it by and we will tell you honestly which one you are looking at.
