What changes the cost of reupholstering car seats

Two shops can quote the same seats very differently. Almost all of the gap comes from four things, and only one of them is the material.

What changes the cost of reupholstering car seats

Reupholstery quotes vary widely, and the variation is rarely about the fabric. It is about how many pieces the seat breaks into, what is found underneath, and how much of the original construction is being reproduced.

1. How many panels the seat has

A flat bench with three panels is a fundamentally different job from a modern sports seat with contoured bolsters, separate side panels, a map pocket and a headrest. Every panel is a piece to pattern, cut, sew and fit. Panel count is the single biggest driver of labour on a seat.

2. The stitch work

  • Plain panels with a single seam — fastest
  • French seams, piping or welting — more time per seam, and the reason a seat looks finished rather than assembled
  • Contrast thread — adds little cost but leaves no room for error, because every stitch is now visible
  • Diamond, pleated or biscuit patterns — the most labour-intensive work we do, and priced accordingly

3. The material

Cloth, vinyl and leather sit at different price points, but on most seats the material is a smaller share of the total than people expect. A seat that takes eight hours to trim takes eight hours regardless of what it is trimmed in.

Where material really moves the number is on a classic, where matching a discontinued grain or weave may mean a specialist supplier.

4. What is underneath

This is the one that separates a real quote from an optimistic one.

Found underneathEffect on the job
Sound foam and frameRecover and go. Best case.
Collapsed or crumbling foamFoam replaced or rebuilt. Skipping this means the new cover sits on the wrong shape and wears early in the same place as the old one.
Broken or cracked frameRepaired properly. Never shimmed — a shimmed frame keeps moving and takes the new cover with it.
Failed springs or webbingReplaced. Common on older bench seats and the reason they sit low.

Why some seats need a look first

Send photos and we will get a number back to you. That said, three of the four factors above are invisible in a photograph — you cannot see foam condition, a cracked frame or failed webbing until the cover comes off, and pricing without knowing means either padding the number to stay safe or revising it later.

We take the seat apart far enough to see what we are dealing with, then give you an itemised estimate at no cost, with the cover, the foam and any frame work priced separately.
