Headliner quotes vary more than most people expect, and the difference is rarely the fabric. It is almost always about how much has to come out of the car to get the board out, and what is found once it is out.
1. How big the roof is, and what shape it is
A two-door coupe headliner is a smaller, simpler panel than a long-wheelbase SUV with a third row. Curves matter too — a heavily contoured board takes more time to get material to lie down on without wrinkles at the corners.
2. Whether there is a sunroof
A sunroof turns one panel into a panel with a large opening, a surround, and often a sliding shade running in tracks. All of it has to come apart and go back together correctly, and the shade itself is frequently in the same condition as the headliner for the same reason. 3. How much trim has to come out
The board cannot leave the car until the pillars, grab handles, visors, dome lights and seals are out of the way. On some vehicles that is quick. On others the seats come out first. This is usually the single biggest driver of labour, and it is entirely determined by the vehicle rather than by anything you choose.
4. The material
Standard replacement headliner material is a knit or suede-look fabric already bonded to a thin foam backing — the foam is what the adhesive grips. Upgrades exist, including suede-look and perforated materials, and they cost more per yard. On most jobs this is a smaller part of the total than people assume.
5. What is found once the board is out
- Boards that have absorbed water and gone soft, usually from a leaking sunroof drain or a windscreen seal
- Brittle trim clips that break on removal and have to be replaced
- Sunroof shades in the same failed state as the liner
- Wiring or dome-light housings that were previously bodged
A water-damaged board is the one that changes a quote materially, because a soft board will not hold new material and has to be repaired or replaced.
What a photo can and cannot tell us
A photo of a sagging headliner tells us the fabric has let go, and that is usually enough for us to come back with an estimate. What it cannot tell us is whether the board is sound, whether there is a sunroof shade behind it, or how much trim has to come out on your particular vehicle — and those are the three things that set the price.
