Sunroof shade repair: why recovering beats replacing the assembly

Dealers often quote a whole sunroof assembly for a shade problem. The panel you already have can usually be recovered instead.

Sunroof shade repair: why recovering beats replacing the assembly

A sunroof sunshade fails for exactly the same reason a headliner does: the fabric is bonded to a thin layer of foam, the foam breaks down in heat, and the fabric lets go. It is the same failure in a smaller panel.

Why the quote you were given may be for the wrong job

Because the shade runs in tracks inside the sunroof cassette, it is often treated as part of the sunroof assembly rather than as a trim panel. That framing turns a modest upholstery job into a large mechanical one.

In most cases the shade panel can be removed, stripped back and recovered — the sunroof mechanism itself is untouched because there is nothing wrong with it.

What recovering involves

  • The shade panel comes out of its tracks
  • Old fabric and every trace of the failed foam are scraped back to clean panel
  • New foam-backed material is bonded down and trimmed to the exact edge profile
  • It goes back in and gets tested through its full travel

The edges matter more than people expect. The panel has to slide in its tracks, so material thickness and how the edges are finished decide whether it moves properly afterwards.

What changes the price

  • How the panel is accessed. Some come out with the headliner in place; others need the headliner dropped, which is most of the labour.
  • Whether the headliner is going too. If both are failing, doing them together is markedly cheaper than doing them separately, because the access work happens once.
  • Matching. A recovered shade should match the headliner around it. Where the headliner has aged, we will tell you honestly how close a match is achievable.
  • Track condition. Occasionally the slides or guides are worn and that is a separate repair.

Two of our Google reviews are about this exact repair

This is not a service we added recently. Two of the shop's reviews are specifically about sunroof shade work, including one customer who was invited to watch the process. The full text of both is quoted on our sunroof shade repair page.
